Invisalign vs. Braces: Which Is Actually Right for You?

By Jeannie Lee-Mirzayan, DDS

There’s no single right answer here. Braces and Invisalign both move teeth, just differently. Which fits you depends on your case, and what you’re willing to live with.

What each one actually is

Braces are fixed: brackets and a wire, adjusted every few weeks, on until treatment ends. Invisalign is a series of removable aligners, each worn one to two weeks before the next. No brackets or wires, but you’re responsible for wearing them 20 to 22 hours a day.

What the research actually shows

A 2026 systematic review of 32 studies found aligners came out ahead: less plaque and gum inflammation, shallower gum pockets, less early pain, better quality of life in month one. Likely reason: aligners come out to eat and brush. Plaque never builds around fixed brackets and wires.

Kaur K, Quadri SA, Saini RS, Alarcón-Sánchez MA, Heboyan A. Comparative impact of clear aligners versus fixed orthodontic appliances on periodontal health, pain, and quality of life: a systematic review and meta-analysis. BDJ Open. 2026;12:60.

Two caveats. Much of the evidence is observational, not randomized, and the authors flagged publication bias, especially for pain. The differences were often small: a third-of-a-millimeter gum pocket gap is real, not meaningful. By 12 months, the quality-of-life edge was gone. Aligners win early. By the end, the experience is similar.

When a case needs more than aligners alone

Effectiveness matters most in complex cases. A randomized trial in severe crowding with extractions found similar overall quality, but better occlusal contacts and more successful outcomes with braces. Big jaw discrepancies, long vertical moves, or large rotations are cases where we’ll tell you directly it’s more than we can offer here, and refer you to a specialist.

Aligners also put compliance in your hands: a wire works whether you think about it or not, an aligner in your pocket does nothing. Say so at your consultation if wear time will be a struggle.

Cost, appearance and daily life

  • Cost. The two overlap heavily; case complexity drives price, not the method.
  • Visibility. Aligners are close to invisible. Braces show unless you choose ceramic or lingual, which cost more.
  • Eating. Aligners come out, so nothing’s off limits, just discipline. Braces stay on, so sticky and hard foods are out.
  • Emergency visits. Broken brackets and poking wires are the top reason for an unscheduled visit. That risk doesn’t exist with aligners.

The part that applies either way

Neither option is done when active treatment ends. Teeth relapse without a retainer, whichever moved them. And a tongue thrust or low tongue posture that caused the crowding doesn’t care which appliance fixed it. We cover that separately here.

Getting a real answer

This decision needs your actual bite, not a general comparison. A 3D scan shows how far your teeth need to move, and whether anything rules either option out. Call 702-734-0776 or tell us what’s going on.

Common Questions

Is Invisalign or braces better?

Neither is better across the board. Both move teeth, just differently. Which fits you depends on how far and in what way your teeth need to move, and whether you’ll realistically wear aligners 20 to 22 hours a day. A 3D scan of your bite is what settles it.

Is Invisalign better for your gums than braces?

On average, a little. A 2026 review of 32 studies found less plaque, less gum inflammation and slightly shallower gum pockets with aligners, most likely because they come out for eating and brushing. The differences were small and much of the evidence was observational, so treat it as a modest edge rather than the deciding factor.

Do braces hurt more than Invisalign?

Early in treatment, on average, yes. The same review found less pain with aligners, mostly in the first weeks. The authors flagged possible publication bias in the pain studies, so read that as a tendency, not a promise.

Can Invisalign handle complex cases?

Many, but not all. Large jaw discrepancies, long vertical movements and big rotations can need more than aligners alone. In a trial of severe crowding treated with extractions, braces produced better contact between the teeth. When a case is more than we can offer here, we’ll tell you directly and refer you to a specialist.

Is Invisalign more expensive than braces?

Not necessarily. The costs overlap heavily, and how complex your case is drives the price more than which method you choose. Ceramic or lingual braces, the less visible options, cost more than standard braces.

Do I need a retainer after Invisalign or braces?

Yes, after either one. Teeth relapse without a retainer no matter what moved them. And if a tongue thrust or low tongue posture contributed to the crowding, it keeps pushing after treatment ends, whichever appliance you used.
